South-South Governors and National Assembly Seek Reconciliation for Fubara and Lawmakers

Political leaders from the South-South region, particularly governors, are making efforts to reconcile conflicting parties, viewing the recent state of emergency as a temporary measure to facilitate this process. President Bola Tinubu declared the emergency in Rivers State on March 18, citing governance breakdown due to tensions between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and state lawmakers, as well as attacks on oil facilities.

Following the declaration, Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the state’s House of Assembly were suspended, and retired Chief of Naval Staff Ibok-Ette Ibas was appointed as the state’s sole administrator. Critics argue that this action could lead to authoritarian rule.

However, sources within the Presidency assert that the emergency rule is intended to provide a respite for both parties, enabling them to de-escalate tensions and engage in meaningful discussions. Key figures, including Senate members and South-South governors, are actively working towards reconciliation, with plans for a mediating panel potentially being established.

The House of Representatives is expected to announce the formation of a committee to oversee the affairs of the Rivers State House of Assembly. The Deputy Spokesman of the House, Philip Agbese, confirmed that the leadership is committed to restoring peace and unity in the state.

Amid these developments, suspended Governor Fubara made a public appearance at a church service, where he was seen engaging with community members. His Chief Press Secretary emphasized Fubara’s commitment to peace and dialogue in resolving the ongoing political crisis.

Additionally, an explosion occurred at a gas pipeline in Rivers State, though the Soku community clarified that it did not take place at the Soku Gas Plant, which remains operational. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, with calls for a thorough inquiry into the incident.
