Asiwaju Moshood Shittu, a prominent figure in the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has advised the party’s national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to avoid hastily forming political alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Shittu warned that any quick merger without a clear agenda or credible presidential candidate could lead to a “marriage of inconvenience,” reminiscent of the problematic coalition formed prior to the 2015 elections.
Shittu emphasized the need for careful consideration, stating, “We must not repeat the 2014 merger that was hastily arranged just to oust President Jonathan, resulting in a disastrous outcome.” He urged Kwankwaso to evaluate the political landscape critically, reminding him that while he is currently a sought-after figure, he should not let political flattery cloud his judgment.
He raised essential questions regarding the coalition’s objectives and candidates, arguing that many opposition mergers in Nigeria fail due to a lack of ideological coherence and vision. Shittu concluded by stressing the importance of prioritizing the interests of the Nigerian people over political expediency, warning that rushing into alliances could jeopardize the future of the nation.
