Amid growing uncertainty over Nigeria’s political future, Dr. Jibril Mustapha, President of the Nigeria Rescue Mission Organisation and former leader of the Buhari Youth Organisation (BYO), has issued a passionate call for former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement released on Sunday in Lagos, Mustapha urged Jonathan to step forward and answer the nationwide appeal for his return to leadership. He argued that Jonathan’s experience and leadership style are crucial as Nigeria faces escalating economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and widespread banditry.
“As the 2027 elections approach, it is imperative that Nigerians unite behind a candidate who can heal divisions and drive meaningful progress,” Mustapha said. “Jonathan’s record shows a dedication to democratic values, inclusivity, and prioritizing the welfare of every citizen.”
Mustapha stressed that Nigeria was at a crossroads, dealing with multiple crises that threaten its stability. He believes Jonathan’s calm leadership and inclusive governance could reunite the nation and restore Nigeria’s standing both at home and abroad.
Highlighting a legal perspective, Mustapha cited the 2022 ruling by a Federal High Court in Bayelsa, which cleared Jonathan’s path to contest again. Justice Dashen ruled that Jonathan’s assumption of the presidency in 2010, following the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, did not amount to an elected term, thus not violating constitutional limits.
Jonathan, who lost his 2015 re-election bid to Muhammadu Buhari, has kept a relatively low profile in recent years. However, the increasing calls for his return are sparking intense speculation about his political intentions.
Interestingly, Mustapha’s endorsement carries symbolic weight, coming from a former key figure in Buhari’s political movement. It reflects the evolving alliances and shifting dynamics already shaping the 2027 race.
Whether Jonathan will respond to the call remains to be seen, but the political ground is clearly shifting — and many believe his return could redefine Nigeria’s future.
