The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has expressed strong disapproval of the current state of the Almajiri system in northern Nigeria, labeling it as embarrassing and in urgent need of reform.
His remarks came during the graduation ceremony for 1,897 Almajiri students and 1,087 out-of-school adolescent girls at the Sultan Maccido Institute of Quranic and General Studies in Sokoto. The event was organized by the Sokoto State Arabic and Islamic Education Board, with support from UNICEF and the Eleva Foundation, aimed at empowering these groups in the state.
Represented by the Ciroma of Sokoto, Alhaji Aliyu Abubakar, the Sultan emphasized that it is time for traditional leaders to take a firm stance against street begging associated with the Almajiri system.
He highlighted the importance of addressing the challenges faced by these children and ensuring they receive proper education and support.
