An Edo State High Court in Benin has ordered the reinstatement of the 18 suspended local government chairmen and vice chairmen in the state. The decision was made by Justice Efe Ikponmwonba following a suit filed by the affected officials.
The court also issued a restraining order against Governor Monday Okpebholo, the Attorney General of the State, and the Accountant General, preventing them from acting on the resolution passed by the state House of Assembly that led to the suspensions.
Justice Ikponmwonba mandated the maintenance of the status quo as of December 12, 2024, until the motion on notice filed the same day is heard.
“The court orders a mandatory injunction compelling the defendants, by themselves or their agents, to restore the chairmen and vice chairmen of their respective local government councils,” the judge stated.
The case has been adjourned to February 17 for further hearing, with a notice to be issued and served on the defendants.
