Hope Uzodimma, the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Governor of Imo State, has expressed his support for President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. He described the decision as a proactive measure aimed at preventing a potential crisis that could destabilize both the state and Nigeria’s economy.
Speaking to journalists in Owerri, Uzodimma emphasized the critical role of Rivers State in Nigeria’s economic stability, particularly regarding crude oil production. He pointed out that ongoing political tensions and the failure of key stakeholders to heed advisory interventions had escalated into a national security concern.
Uzodimma highlighted recent incidents of pipeline bombings and explosions in the state, stating that such unrest is intolerable at a time when Nigeria is working to boost its crude oil production. He praised President Tinubu’s actions as commendable and necessary for maintaining order.
“The President was very proactive, and his actions are highly commendable. Prevention, they say, is better than cure. Imagine what would have happened if the impeachment went ahead—it would have triggered actions and reactions, leading to violence and widespread unrest,” Uzodimma remarked.
He also expressed confidence in the National Assembly’s support for the president’s decision, asserting that it was made in the national interest. While acknowledging that the Progressive Governors’ Forum had not convened since the declaration, Uzodimma assured that the forum stands firmly behind the President’s actions, emphasizing their commitment to national security and stability.
