Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Hon. Garba Datti Muhammad, the national vice chairman (North West) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has issued a cautionary message to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai. In an open letter published by a national daily, he advised Atiku to reconsider his ambitions for another presidential run.

Datti, who represents the Sabon Gari Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, noted Atiku’s long history of presidential aspirations since 1993. He expressed concern that Atiku’s current consideration of a coalition with other aggrieved politicians stems from the likelihood that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) may not grant him the presidential ticket.

He urged Atiku, who will be nearing 80 by the next election, to embrace his role as an elder statesman instead of pursuing another campaign. Datti also referenced former Vice President Muhammad Namadi Sambo, suggesting that Atiku should adopt a similar low-profile approach.

In his letter, Datti warned Atiku against listening to El-Rufai and others who may promise coalition support, arguing that even if he were to contest, he lacks new proposals to offer the electorate. He reminded Atiku of his past role in privatizing national assets, which could be seen unfavorably by voters.

Additionally, Datti called on El-Rufai to reconcile with the APC, highlighting his foundational role in the party and urging him to reflect on his previous statements about leaving politics if he departed from the APC.

Datti concluded by emphasizing the current stability and progress in Kaduna State under the leadership of Governor Uba Sani and Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, while also noting the historic representation of the North West in national leadership positions. He expressed optimism about the region’s future under the Tinubu administration and its focus on economic improvement and infrastructure development
