The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has stated that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, does not need any alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or support from its top figures like Atiku Abubakar or Nasir El-Rufai to win the 2027 presidential election.

In an interview, Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, Deputy President of the NLC Political Commission, said Obi remains a “sellable candidate” with nationwide support and would triumph in a free and fair contest against President Bola Tinubu. He pointed to Obi’s 2023 performance, especially his victory in Lagos, Tinubu’s home turf, as proof of his widespread appeal.

Ndubuaku dismissed the idea of Obi returning to the PDP, describing the party as riddled with internal crisis, unlike the Labour Party, which he claimed has resolved its leadership issues through the Supreme Court.

Reinforcing Obi’s independent strength, Ndubuaku emphasized that fears of zoning disruptions were minor compared to the urgency of rescuing Nigeria from economic decline. He noted that the Obidients Movement remains firmly behind Obi, regardless of party platform, and that the North’s concerns about power rotation were misplaced.

“Obi’s not desperate. He doesn’t need eight years to transform Nigeria,” Ndubuaku said.
