A  Catholic priest,  Fr. Joseph Enyiaka, has been accused of fatally shooting a boy after the child set off firecrackers within church grounds.

The incident took place during a Holy Mass celebration at St. Colombus Parish in Amaimo, located in the Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, South East Nigeria, as the community welcomed the New Year 2025.

While the identity of the deceased remains unconfirmed, police spokesperson Henry Okoye provided details on the situation. He confirmed that an investigation has been launched to uncover the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

“The priest has been arrested and is currently in our custody,” Okoye stated. He indicated that authorities are looking into whether the shooting was intentional, mentioning, “I don’t know if the act was intentional. I don’t think so. But we are still investigating.”

Additionally, the Nigeria Police Force has enforced a ban on fireworks, commonly used during Christmas and New Year celebrations. On December 1, 2024, Imo State’s Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, reiterated the prohibition on the sale, use, and distribution of firecrackers within the state.
