Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged businesses to adopt flexible work arrangements to alleviate severe traffic congestion in Victoria Island and Ikoyi. This recommendation comes in light of the gridlock caused by the closure of the Independence Bridge in Bonny Camp, which has left many commuters stranded.

The bridge closure, necessitated by ongoing repairs from the Federal Ministry of Works, resulted in significant delays for workers. Oluwatosin Akanni, a local cake maker, described her experience, stating, “I left the office at 9 in the evening but got home past 2 am today. Everything was at a standstill. We can’t continue like this.”

In a statement posted on X.com, Sanwo-Olu encouraged businesses to explore alternative work models, including remote and hybrid arrangements. “A temporary shift in work culture can go a long way in reducing traffic pressure and supporting our collective well-being,” he stated.

Acknowledging the frustrations caused by the bridge closure, Sanwo-Olu explained that the decision to repair the bridge had been carefully planned for over three years due to its deteriorating structural integrity. He emphasized that delaying the repairs could have posed risks to public safety.
