The Federal Government, through the National Boundary Commission (NBC), has called for peaceful coexistence among border communities in Abia and Cross River states following recent violent clashes over a boundary dispute.
The clashes, which occurred on January 4 and 5 between the Isu community in Abia’s Arochukwu Local Government Area and the Ukwa Mbiabong Ukwa Eburutu community in Cross River’s Odukpani Local Government Area, resulted in several fatalities.
NBC Director-General, Adamu Adaji, condemned the violence, calling it “unacceptable and deeply regrettable.” In a statement issued in Abuja, he extended condolences to the affected communities and urged all parties to engage in peaceful dialogue to resolve the issues.
Adaji emphasized the NBC’s ongoing efforts to address the crisis, referencing a joint meeting held in Calabar on December 11, 2024, where the Deputy Governors of both states reaffirmed their commitment to peace. The meeting also outlined steps for resolution, including sharing a disputed triangular land area between the Okon-Aku and Ikun communities, subject to approval by the deputy governors.
Further discussions are scheduled for January 20, 2025, in Abuja, where both states will submit supporting documents for their claims over disputed areas. A joint committee has also been formed to assist with the rehabilitation and return of displaced communities.
Adaji stressed the importance of dialogue over violence, emphasizing the NBC’s neutrality in mediating the situation. He called on traditional rulers, community leaders, and security agencies to work together to ensure peace ahead of the upcoming technical meeting.
He expressed confidence that continued collaboration and accurate surveying would lead to lasting stability and development in the region.
