Ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar has addressed the recent defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a statement posted on X, he emphasized that “freedom of association and expression are core democratic rights—not privileges.” He stated that these rights are fundamental in a democracy, warning that undermining them jeopardizes the very fabric of democratic society.
Atiku’s remarks come in light of the defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former governor Ifeanyi Okowa, along with other PDP members in Delta State, to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Atiku noted that a just and functional democracy relies on the rule of law, credible elections, and accountability.
