The All Progressives Congress (APC) has refuted rumors regarding a potential rift between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, dismissing claims that Tinubu is considering a new running mate for the upcoming 2027 elections. Although Tinubu has not yet formally announced his candidacy for a second term, his supporters are already mobilizing for his re-election.

APC National Director of Publicity, Alhaji Bala Ibrahim, labeled the reports as unfounded, stating, “This is pure speculation without foundation. These are beer-parlour discussions that should not be taken seriously.” He added that any decision to replace the vice president would require extensive consultation with key stakeholders.

In related political developments, representatives from the North Central geopolitical zone have renewed their call for either the presidency or vice presidency in 2027. At a press conference, they emphasized that if Tinubu is granted the “right of first refusal” for the presidential ticket, the vice-presidential slot should be allocated to their region. They noted that North Central has not produced a democratically elected president or vice president since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.

Bala Ibrahim responded to these demands, calling them unrealistic and suggesting that the North Central should not view the presidency or vice presidency as a right, particularly given their lower electoral contributions compared to other zones. He emphasized that discussions about zoning should only occur after Tinubu completes his first term.
