Amnesty International has called for an independent investigation into allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The senator accused Akpabio of sidelining her in legislative proceedings as retaliation for rejecting his alleged sexual advances.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has backed Akpoti-Uduaghan, claiming she has been unfairly prevented from representing her constituents. Despite mounting criticism, Akpabio continues to serve without scrutiny, while Akpoti-Uduaghan faces a six-month suspension for “unruly conduct.”
Isa Sanusi, Amnesty International’s Nigeria Director, warned that failure to investigate the claims could discourage victims of sexual harassment from speaking out. He urged authorities to prove there is “zero tolerance for sexual harassment—no matter who is involved.”
