The Nigeria Police Force has summoned Emir Muhammad Sanusi II for questioning regarding the violence that erupted during the recent Eid-el-Fitr procession in Kano. This incident resulted in the death of a local vigilante member, Surajo Rabiu, and left another individual injured. The police invitation was communicated through an official letter dated April 4, 2025, signed by Commissioner of Police Olajide Rufus Ibitoye, on behalf of the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja.
The letter requested Emir Sanusi II to attend an investigative meeting concerning the violence that occurred during the Sallah celebration as his entourage moved from the Eid prayer ground to the palace. The Emir is expected to appear before the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja at 10:00 AM on April 8, 2025.
This development follows heightened tensions in Kano State, particularly after the State Police Command decided to ban the annual Durbar festival due to security concerns. Despite this ban, a motorcade procession led by Emir Sanusi II took place on the third day of the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations. In response to the violence, the Kano State Police Commissioner has established an eight-member Special Investigation Panel to look into the matter.
As of now, there has been no official response from Emir Sanusi II’s palace regarding the police invitation.
