Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has described governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress as “politically lazy” over their opposition to his Rainbow Coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike made the comment during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Tuesday while responding to criticism of his political activities and his decision to support President Bola Tinubu.
The former Rivers State governor said backing Tinubu did not mean he had abandoned his political party or believed other political parties should not be allowed to field candidates in the 2027 elections.
The APC governors, led by their chairman and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, had said they would not participate in, support or endorse any alliance that could undermine Tinubu’s re-election bid or affect APC candidates at any level.
Reacting to the governors’ position, Wike said: “They are politically lazy. When you have your local problems, don’t use Mr President as your excuse.”
Wike also said disagreements over his political activities did not begin with his support for Tinubu. He recalled facing opposition both while serving as Rivers State governor and after becoming Minister of the FCT.
“This thing did not start today. It started at a ministerial position. They were not happy that I was Minister of FCT. Also, they were unhappy when I was governor,” he said.
The FCT minister further argued that he had a broader understanding of the political situation than some of his critics because of the information available to him, suggesting that those questioning his decisions might have a different view if they had access to the same information.
