President Bola Tinubu has nominated former Rivers South-East Senator Magnus Abe to be the chairman of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), seeking the Senate’s confirmation for him and 20 other nominees to serve on the boards of two key petroleum regulatory agencies.

In separate letters to the Senate, Tinubu requested expedited approval for board members of the NUPRC and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). Abe, who previously served as a board member of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and currently chairs the National Agency of the Great Green Wall, will lead the NUPRC along with non-executive commissioners including Paul Jezhi and Sunday Babalola.

The President’s nominations include seven executive commissioners for the NUPRC, such as Muhammed Lamido for finance and Edu Inyang for exploration and acreage. For the NMDPRA, Adegbite Adeniji has been nominated as chairman, with nominees including Kenneth Kobani and Asabe Ahmed as non-executive members.

Tinubu emphasized the importance of effective oversight in the oil and gas sectors and tasked all appointees with performing their duties professionally. The Senate is expected to screen the nominees in the coming weeks for formal confirmation votes.
