The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced significant developments in the investigation of recent violent attacks in Benue and Plateau states. In a press briefing in Abuja, he revealed that 53 suspects have been arrested in connection with these incidents, which have resulted in tragic loss of life and widespread injuries.

Egbetokun characterized the brutal attack that occurred on June 13 in Yelewata community, Benue State, as a “coordinated attack of terror.” This incident alone led to the deaths of 47 individuals, with 27 others sustaining serious injuries. The police have described the situation as alarming, highlighting the need for urgent intervention to restore peace in the affected areas.

In detail, the arrests include 26 suspects specifically linked to the Yelewata massacre. Additionally, 22 suspects were apprehended in relation to separate violent incidents in Plateau, along with 5 more suspects connected to a more recent attack in Benue. The authorities have indicated that these arrests are part of a broader strategy to dismantle the networks behind these violent acts.

As part of the ongoing investigation, law enforcement recovered 2 general-purpose machine guns and 8 AK-47 rifles, which were used in the Yelewata attack. This recovery underscores the serious nature of the threats facing communities in these regions.

Egbetokun emphasized the commitment of the police to ensuring security and safety for all citizens, stating that further investigations are ongoing and that additional arrests may be expected as the situation develops.

More details on the investigation and subsequent actions taken by the police will be provided in the coming days.
