The United States has announced it will begin a naval blockade of all maritime traffic entering and leaving Iranian ports after diplomatic talks failed to produce a new agreement, escalating tensions in the Gulf region.
According to the U.S. military, the blockade will take effect on Monday and will apply to all vessels accessing Iranian ports and coastal waters, including those in the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Officials said the operation would be enforced “impartially” against ships of all nationalities.
The move follows weekend negotiations in Islamabad, which marked the first direct U.S.-Iran talks in more than a decade. The discussions, aimed at securing a broader ceasefire and addressing Iran’s nuclear activities, reportedly broke down over disagreements on uranium enrichment and maritime access through the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. officials said Iran rejected Washington’s key demands, including limits on its nuclear programme, restrictions on funding regional militant groups, and broader guarantees for open shipping routes.
President Donald Trump confirmed the decision, warning that the United States would intercept vessels suspected of paying what he described as “illegal tolls” to Iran. He also said U.S. naval forces would take action against any attempt to disrupt operations in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy chokepoint.
“No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas,” Trump said, adding that any hostile action against U.S. forces or commercial vessels would be met with force.
The announcement immediately rattled global markets. Oil prices surged past $100 per barrel, the U.S. dollar strengthened, and equity futures fell amid fears of supply disruptions.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which about one-fifth of global oil supplies pass, is expected to see reduced traffic as shipping companies begin diverting vessels away from the area.
Iranian officials strongly condemned the move, warning that any blockade would be treated as a violation of the ceasefire and met with a “harsh and decisive” response. Tehran accused Washington of escalating tensions and undermining diplomatic efforts.
Iranian leaders also reiterated their position that any agreement must be “balanced and fair,” while rejecting what they described as shifting U.S. demands.
Analysts warn that the blockade could significantly disrupt global energy flows and prolong volatility in oil markets, with some predicting sustained price increases if tensions persist.
Despite the escalation, President Trump said he believes Iran may still return to negotiations, though he added that the United States is prepared to proceed without further talks if necessary.
The situation remains fluid, with international observers warning that the confrontation risks widening into a broader regional conflict if diplomatic channels are not restored.
