President Bola Tinubu has pledged that his administration will move forward with plans to create state police as part of broader efforts to address insecurity across Nigeria.
The President made the declaration while hosting state governors to an interfaith breaking of fast at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, marking the observance of Ramadan and Lent. He used the occasion to stress the need for unity, compassion and inclusive governance beyond political considerations.
Tinubu commended the governors for their ongoing initiatives during the holy season but urged them to intensify efforts at the grassroots level. He emphasized the importance of reaching vulnerable communities and ensuring that development and opportunity are not influenced by religion, ethnicity or social status.
Reaffirming his campaign commitments, the President assured Nigerians that his promises would not be deferred. He described security as the bedrock of economic growth, noting that agriculture, commerce and family life cannot thrive in an atmosphere of fear.
According to him, the proposed state police structure is aimed at giving states greater capacity to safeguard residents while maintaining a strong national security framework. He stressed that the initiative is driven by practical necessity rather than political considerations.
Tinubu added that meaningful reform requires courage and collective resolve, expressing confidence that collaborative action between federal and state authorities would result in a safer and more stable Nigeria.
