The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State is currently experiencing a leadership struggle involving several key figures: Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, Senator Ede Dafinone, and Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo. This dispute extends to both the state and Delta Central senatorial district levels.

Following his defection from the PDP to the APC, a faction of the party recognizes Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as the leader of the APC in Delta State, aligning with the tradition of the sitting governor assuming the leadership role. However, another faction insists on Ovie Omo-Agege, who was the APC’s gubernatorial candidate in 2023, as the leader. Some reports indicate the APC may sanction Omo-Agege for claiming the party leadership after Oborevwori’s defection.

In the Delta Central senatorial district, one faction supports Senator Ede Dafinone as the leader, while another recognizes Festus Keyamo in that role. The endorsement of Governor Oborevwori has been described by some APC chieftains as a “political violation” and an “affront to democracy,” with allegations that Oborevwori is not even a registered member of the party. Senator Dafinone has accused the organizers of a unity meeting of trying to undermine his position in favor of Keyamo.

The defection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, along with other PDP members, to the APC has been characterized as a “political tsunami” and a significant boost for the party ahead of the 2027 elections. This realignment is seen by some as a strategic move to position Delta State for growth and align with the ruling party at the center. Overall, the APC in Delta State is navigating a complex leadership struggle, with various factions vying for control and influence within the party.
