The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the traditional military parade scheduled for the 26th Democracy Day celebrations on Thursday, June 12, 2025. No official reason has been provided for this cancellation.
Instead, President Bola Tinubu will deliver a national broadcast at 7 a.m. on Thursday. This announcement was made by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Democracy Day Celebration. Later in the day, the President will also attend a special joint session of the National Assembly at noon, where key democratic milestones and government reforms will be discussed.
The revised schedule of events includes:
- Presidential National Broadcast: June 12, 2025, at 7 a.m.
- Cancellation of the Democracy Day Parade.
- National Assembly Joint Session: June 12, 2025, at 12 noon.
- Public Lecture: State House Conference Centre, Abuja, at 4 p.m. The theme is “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms.”
The public lecture will be exclusively covered by accredited State House correspondents. The committee expressed its commitment to ensuring a meaningful celebration of Democracy Day, despite the changes to traditional events.
