On Thursday, April 24, 2025, hundreds of women from the Opobo Kingdom in Rivers State staged a protest demanding the immediate reinstatement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who has been suspended following the declaration of a state of emergency. The women condemned both the suspension and the appointment of a sole administrator as unconstitutional.
Led by Amaopuorubo Felicia Pepple, President of the Opobo Women Association, the protest began with a solemn prayer session at King Jaja Monument Square. Clad in black attire, the women sought divine intervention, with Venerable Michael Dappa of Christ Army Church delivering an inspiring sermon titled “The battle is the Lord’s.”
As they marched to Water Side, the protesters chanted, “Bring back our Governor,” and expressed their disappointment over the six-month suspension. Pepple emphasized Fubara’s positive impact on the state’s development and appealed to President Bola Tinubu to ensure his swift return.
The women articulated a strong desire for democratic governance, stating, “We voted for our peaceful and amiable Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara. We say no to emergency rule.” They highlighted the suffering of Rivers State residents under the emergency rule and lamented the lack of festive activities in Opobo Town, which usually celebrates vibrant Easter festivities.
Residents, including Blessing Accra-Jaja, described the atmosphere during the holiday as “particularly sad,” noting the decline in business and activity, leading to a ghost town sentiment. Accra-Jaja urged the National Assembly Reconciliation Committee and President Tinubu to reinstate Fubara to restore peace and the festive spirit in
