President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has hailed former President Olusegun Obasanjo as an “extraordinary leader and statesman” on the occasion of his 88th birthday. In a tribute, Tinubu recognized Obasanjo’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s development, describing his interventions in national affairs—though sometimes controversial—as instrumental in shaping public policies and holding leaders accountable.
In his message, Tinubu reflected on Obasanjo’s pivotal role in critical moments of Nigeria’s history, including his leadership during the Nigerian Civil War and overseeing the transition to civilian rule in 1979. He stated, “Providence has constantly thrust General Obasanjo to the forefront at critical junctures in Nigeria’s story.”
The President also noted Obasanjo’s emergence as a civilian president in 1999 after being freed from prison, marking the beginning of a new democratic era in Nigeria. Tinubu emphasized Obasanjo’s ongoing influence in both national and global affairs, referring to him as an “ambassador of global peace” whose efforts in conflict resolution have earned him respect across Africa.
In closing, Tinubu expressed hope for Obasanjo’s continued wisdom and strength, stating, “I pray that God Almighty will grant him more years so the nation and Africa can continue to benefit from his wisdom and knowledge.”
