Thailand has launched air strikes on Cambodian military targets amid escalating tensions over a long-standing border dispute. The conflict flared on July 24, 2025, when Cambodia fired rockets and artillery, resulting in the death of a civilian in Thailand.
The area in contention, known as the Emerald Triangle, borders Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos and is home to several ancient temples. Clashes have occurred intermittently over the years, with the most recent flare-up beginning when Cambodian forces reportedly opened fire on Thai positions near two temples along the border.
The Thai military responded by deploying six F-16 jets from Ubon Ratchathani province to strike Cambodian military targets. According to Thai military officials, these air strikes aimed to neutralize perceived threats after Cambodian artillery shells allegedly hit residential areas in Thailand.
Both nations have exchanged blame for the escalation. Cambodian officials claim that Thailand initiated the conflict, while Thailand accuses Cambodia of targeting civilians. The Thai prime minister’s office has stated that all border crossings have been shut down and nearby residents evacuated.
In response to the violence, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council to address what he termed “unprovoked military aggression.” Meanwhile, Thailand’s government has accused Cambodia of being “inhumane” and has taken steps to bolster its military presence along the border.
The situation is further complicated by recent diplomatic tensions, including the expulsion of ambassadors and accusations of laying new landmines by both sides. As the conflict escalates, both countries are urged to act with caution to avoid further violence.
