Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, has stated that terrorists do not represent any religion and are merely targeting available victims across Nigeria. He described the country’s security situation as “very concerning and alarming” and warned against politicizing the issue.
During a press conference on Saturday in Sokoto, Tambuwal argued that recent security designations, such as Nigeria’s classification as a Country of Particular Concern by U.S. President Donald Trump, misrepresent the complexities of the country’s challenges. He emphasized that Nigeria faces a security crisis affecting people of all faiths, rather than a religious conflict.
Tambuwal remarked, “These marauders do not represent any religion. How else can one explain what they are doing in Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, and other states? They are common criminals attacking every soul they come across.” He noted that insecurity has become a national problem transcending politics, ethnicity, and religion, emphasizing the need for collective action.
He called on global partners, including the United States, to support Nigeria’s efforts to combat insecurity, indicating that the issue is about “our country” rather than a specific political figure or party.
Drawing from his experience as a former governor, he shared past instances of collaboration among governors across party lines to address national security issues, emphasizing the need for unity in the fight against insecurity.
Tambuwal urged leaders at all levels to put aside political differences and work together to counter the threats facing the nation. He concluded that addressing these challenges is critical for the safety and livelihood of all Nigerians.
