Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has responded to criticism over his comments about Nigeria’s challenges, stating that speaking the truth should not be seen as de-marketing the country.

In a statement shared on X on Thursday, May 8, 2025, Obi defended his recent remarks, which some including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu interpreted as negative portrayals of Nigeria abroad. Sanwo-Olu had accused Obi of making disparaging statements during a recent talk at Johns Hopkins University in the U.S.

“I tried reminding those who argue that I de-marketed Nigeria by telling the truth about its economic and social status… that truth does not in any way de-market a nation,” Obi said. “Rather, it refines and strengthens it.”

Obi, who spoke after attending a memorial lecture for elder statesman Chief Edwin Clark alongside former President Goodluck Jonathan and ex-Head of State Yakubu Gowon, questioned the silence of Nigerians who had previously protested under the Goodluck Jonathan administration. He cited worsening conditions including inflation, insecurity, and poor governance.

He added, “Where are those who called President Jonathan all sorts of names… when prices were moderate and manageable? Where are they now that everything has increased tenfold?”

Obi emphasized the importance of truth and justice in nation-building, warning against using facts for political convenience. “Nigeria must work for all Nigerians, not just for a privileged few,” he concluded.
