Nigeria’s quest for World Cup qualification took a frustrating turn on Tuesday as Zimbabwe held the Super Eagles to a 1-1 draw with a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Victor Osimhen gave Nigeria the lead in the 73rd minute, heading home a pinpoint cross from Ola Aina. The Super Eagles looked set to claim all three points until Tawanda Chirewa capitalized on a defensive lapse in the dying moments, slotting the ball past goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Despite dominating possession and creating multiple chances, Nigeria failed to extend their lead. Substitute Tolu Arokodare played a crucial role in the opener, holding up play before laying off to Aina for the assist. However, missed opportunities proved costly, with Wilfred Ndidi squandering a golden chance in the 83rd minute after a clever pass from Moses Simon.

The visitors nearly found the net earlier when Walter Musona’s powerful strike hit the underside of the crossbar in the 76th minute following a miscommunication in Nigeria’s defense.

Osimhen was forced off late in the game due to cramp, with Victor Boniface coming on, but Zimbabwe made their pressure count in stoppage time as Chirewa pounced to snatch a crucial point.

The draw leaves Nigeria in a precarious position in Group C, needing a strong response in their next fixture to stay on course for World Cup qualification.
