Political activist and founder of SaharaReporters, Omoyele Sowore, has raised alarms about an alleged plot by the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) to arrest him after he exposed what he claims is a corrupt extortion scheme at a police checkpoint in Lagos State.
Sowore, who has run for the presidency twice under the African Action Congress (AAC), stated that he has been summoned by the police for questioning due to a viral video he posted on social media highlighting the checkpoint’s practices. He revealed this development in a post on his Facebook page, expressing concern over the potential charges being prepared against him.
In his post, Sowore shared details of a conversation with a senior police officer in Abuja who informed him about the impending questioning. He stated, “I have just concluded a conversation with the senior Nigeria Police Force officer… regarding an extortion video I did at a police ‘checkpoint’ in Lagos, which prompted the police hierarchy to launch a manhunt for me.”
He continued, noting that while formal charges had not yet been prepared, the police were actively pursuing him. Sowore concluded his message with his trademark hashtag, #RevolutionNow, signaling his ongoing activism against perceived government injustices.
Sowore’s accusations come amid wider discussions about police conduct and accountability in Nigeria, particularly regarding extortion and corruption within law enforcement. His outspoken criticism of the government has often put him at odds with authorities, leading to previous arrests and legal challenges.
