The South-South leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially endorsed Rotimi Amaechi for the 2027 presidential election, favoring him over candidates such as former Anambra Governor Peter Obi. This announcement was made by former Edo State Governor John Odigie-Oyegun during a consultative meeting in Benin City.
Odigie-Oyegun stated that Amaechi had formally informed regional leaders of his presidential ambitions and received unanimous support from stakeholders in the zone. He praised Amaechi for consulting with the leaders before moving forward with his campaign, indicating respect for the political structure of the region.
Amaechi has previously indicated a willingness to serve a single term if he secures the ADC presidential ticket. He advocates for a southern candidate to represent the party, arguing that the South should complete an eight-year presidential term before power returns to the North. He has warned that backing a northern candidate might undermine the ADC’s support base in the South.
Despite having contested the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2022, where he finished second, Amaechi remains a significant figure in Nigerian politics as he eyes the ADC nomination against notable figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, who are also interested in the ticket for the upcoming election.
