ADC Fires Back: ‘Courts Have No Power Over Party Matters’ As NBA Backs Mark-Led Leadership

The African Democratic Congress has thrown its weight behind the position of the Nigerian Bar Association, insisting that courts have no jurisdiction over internal party disputes.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, described the NBA’s warning against judicial interference as a strong validation of the party’s long-held stance.

Abdullahi said ongoing legal actions challenging the leadership of David Mark were not genuine disputes but deliberate attempts to manipulate the judicial system for political gain.

According to him, such moves amount to abuse of court processes, including forum shopping and what he termed “mala fide litigation” aimed at destabilising the party’s leadership structure.

He stressed that any court order obtained in violation of existing electoral laws remains invalid and cannot be used as a basis to alter party leadership.

The ADC spokesman also expressed concern over what he described as continued efforts by certain actors to drag the courts into matters clearly outside their jurisdiction, warning that such actions only create confusion and undermine internal party stability.

He commended the NBA for reaffirming the rule of law and cautioning legal practitioners against conduct capable of eroding judicial integrity.

Abdullahi further noted that the NBA’s call for disciplinary measures against erring lawyers highlights the seriousness of the issue.

He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to remain neutral and avoid taking steps that could legitimise processes inconsistent with the Electoral Act.

Describing the crisis as one that goes beyond party politics, he said it touches on the broader need to protect democratic principles in Nigeria.

The ADC, however, reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing lawful means to defend its mandate and preserve the integrity of the democratic system.
