A 55-year-old Nigerian man has been arrested by the South African Police Service (SAPS) on suspicion of drug trafficking after arriving at OR Tambo International Airport from São Paulo, Brazil. According to SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Van Wyk, the suspect was taken into custody when authorities discovered that he had allegedly swallowed cocaine capsules valued at approximately R7.5 million.
The arrest occurred shortly after the man landed, and a medical X-ray confirmed the presence of multiple capsules in his system. As of now, he is in the process of expelling the ingested substances and is expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court soon.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about drug trafficking and the methods employed by traffickers to smuggle illegal substances across international borders.
