The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State has encountered a significant blow as the entire business community wing, led by Alhaji Chika Sarkin Gishiri, chairman of the Sokoto State Traders Association, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This mass defection took place at the residence of Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, the APC leader in Sokoto State, with confirmation provided by Bashar Abubakar, Wamakko’s media consultant.

The traders, under Sarkin Gishiri’s leadership, decided to join the APC due to a shared desire to positively contribute to the development of the state. He noted that this shift represents a substantial loss for the PDP, as key members of the business community have now aligned themselves with the ruling party.

Sarkin Gishiri also expressed strong support for Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto’s administration, praising its achievements in infrastructure and governance. He credited Wamakko’s long-standing support for the success of many business initiatives in the state.

Alhaji Ladan Almustapha, the former chairman of the State Traders Association and current chair of the Sokoto State Chamber of Commerce, reiterated that all leadership within the traders’ associations had united in their support for the APC. He commended Wamakko’s exemplary leadership during his time as governor, reinforcing their confidence in his political vision.

In response to the defections, Wamakko expressed his delight and assured the new APC members that they would receive equal treatment within the party. He committed to government intervention for the completion of renovations at the burnt Sokoto Central Market and promised financial support to traders to stimulate economic activity.

Wamakko also criticized the previous PDP-led administration for removing main water pipes, which he argued caused water shortages throughout the state. He emphasized that the APC government is dedicated to addressing these issues and enhancing the overall development of Sokoto.
