Vice President Kashim Shettima has humorously warned former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to anticipate more political jabs from him as the 2027 general elections approach, despite the respect he holds for him.

Shettima made this remark while addressing dignitaries at a symposium in Abuja celebrating the 60th birthday of Kayode Fayemi, former governor of Ekiti State. Acknowledging Atiku’s presence at the event, he reflected on their interactions during the 2023 presidential election, referring to himself as an “adjunct provocateur” who took “hot shots” at Atiku. He praised Atiku for handling the criticisms with composure, noting that he often refers to him as “Baba,” a term of endearment meaning father.

The Vice President’s comments were met with laughter from the audience, including Atiku, who managed a smile in response. Shettima’s lighthearted approach hints at the competitive nature of the upcoming elections, as political tensions are expected to rise.

Atiku, who ran against President Bola Tinubu and Shettima in the 2023 elections, has recently voiced concerns about the current administration. He accused the government of undermining democracy and attempting to weaken opposition parties, claiming they offered N50 million to opposition factions to diminish their influence. He has called for unity among opposition parties to form a coalition aimed at unseating the Tinubu-led administration in 2027.

In his speech at the symposium, Shettima urged all leaders to come together, regardless of political differences. He emphasized the importance of unity for Nigeria’s future, stating, “The trajectory of global growth is facing Africa, and Nigeria must make or break that future. Nigeria must work for Africa to work. I beg all our leaders here, let’s unite for the common good of our people.”
