In a bold declaration, Ambassador Umar Damagum, the Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has declared that a recent zonal congress organized by factions loyal to Nyesom Wike in the South South region lacks legitimacy. This congress was spearheaded by Chief Dan Orbih in Cross River State, with Wike asserting it would serve as the definitive congress for the zone.
During the inauguration of a new South South Zonal Caretaker Committee at the PDP headquarters in Wadata Plaza, Damagum emphasized that the tenure of the previous committee had expired, making the formation of a caretaker committee essential before holding the upcoming zonal congresses.
Damagum did not hold back in his assessment of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), urging Nigerians to view the PDP as the true frontrunner in the political arena. “There was no election in the South South concerning our party,” he declared. He expressed confidence in the new committee members to perform their duties diligently and work towards establishing an inclusive Executive Committee for the zone.
Damagum reaffirmed the PDP’s historic significance, boasting 27 years of experience compared to the newer APC and other parties. He called on leaders to take charge of their fates and not be swayed by fear, urging them to engage truthfully in discussions about the current government’s performance.
