The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has downplayed any concerns regarding the recent meeting between former presidential candidate Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, ex-Governor Donald Duke of Cross River State, and former President Olusegun Obasanjo at Obasanjo’s home in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The meeting was reportedly held to discuss the political future of Nigeria.
In light of increasing discussions about the 2027 general elections, particularly after Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume advocated for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election, the APC remains confident about its position. Akume asserted that there would be “no vacancy” in Aso Rock until 2031, when Tinubu would complete his second term.
However, opposition parties are determined to unseat the ruling APC in the upcoming elections.
During the weekend, Kwankwaso and Duke met privately with Obasanjo. Although the details of their discussions have not been publicly disclosed, sources indicate that the meeting was part of broader strategic planning for the 2027 elections.
Obasanjo, a significant political figure in Nigeria, has been actively engaging with various stakeholders to seek alternatives to both the APC and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He has recently criticized Tinubu’s administration over allegations of corruption and rising debt levels.
Kwankwaso, a key figure in Kano State politics, and Duke, a former governor from the south south region, are both seen as influential voices who could contribute to national governance and unity.
While the specifics of their conversation remain confidential, Kwankwaso hinted at a shared commitment to challenge the current political landscape in Nigeria. In a post on his verified Facebook page, he expressed gratitude for Obasanjo’s hospitality and highlighted the importance of discussing national issues, including the future of governance.
In response to the meeting, Bala Ibrahim, the National Publicity Director of the APC, dismissed the gathering as inconsequential to the party’s continuity. He emphasized Tinubu’s political stature, asserting that he far surpasses his opposition counterparts.
Ibrahim stated, “With all due respect, I hold Obasanjo in high esteem, but when it comes to contemporary Nigerian politics, Tinubu is unmatched. The combination of Obasanjo, Kwankwaso, Peter Obi, and Donald Duke does not pose a threat to Tinubu. These individuals were defeated in the last election.”
He further noted that Obasanjo’s previous endorsements had not resulted in electoral success, recalling how Obasanjo supported former President Goodluck Jonathan, who lost to Buhari, and another candidate in the last election, whom Tinubu also defeated.
Ibrahim concluded that no matter how many meetings they hold, the opposition figures do not represent a credible threat to the APC government.
