Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, has been sentenced to death by hanging by the Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja.

The judgment was delivered on Monday by Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme, who found Nwachukwu guilty of culpable homicide in connection with the death of his wife on April 8, 2022.

The court dismissed Nwachukwu’s no-case submission, ruling that the evidence presented by the prosecution sufficiently proved that he was responsible for the acts leading to Osinachi’s death.

Nwachukwu had been standing trial following allegations that he subjected the popular singer to years of domestic violence, which ultimately resulted in her death.

The tragic death of Osinachi, known for her powerful voice and gospel hit songs, sparked nationwide outrage and renewed conversations around domestic abuse in Nigeria.

Following his conviction, the court ordered that Nwachukwu be executed by hanging, as prescribed under Nigerian law for the crime of culpable homicide.
