Chief Ogochukwu Onyema, a prominent Labour Party (LP) figure in Enugu State and former senatorial aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has declared that he would switch to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) if Mr. Peter Obi, the former LP presidential candidate, joins the party.

Speaking in an interview in Enugu, Onyema described the SDP as an “emerging party” and commended its internal discipline, noting that it forbids members from taking the party to court — a feature he finds appealing.

Onyema, a chieftain of the Ohanaeze socio-cultural group, also used the platform to praise Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, calling him a personal friend and a “proactive, strategic thinker.” He applauded Mbah’s developmental initiatives and described his leadership as “futuristic.”

Reflecting on his political journey, Onyema revealed his disappointment with the PDP, having failed three times in his attempts to secure nominations for the House of Representatives and the Senate. He stated that despite playing a role in the PDP’s 2023 election success in Enugu, he declined any appointment and opted to chart his own course.

While he did not declare any political ambition for 2027, Onyema hinted that his next steps would depend on broader political movements, particularly those of Peter Obi.
