As Ondo State conducts its local government elections across 18 local government areas, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and his deputy, Dr. Olayide Adelami, have expressed satisfaction with the electoral process. The elections, involving 12 political parties and taking place in 203 wards, are being monitored closely for fairness and transparency.
Governor Aiyedatiwa criticized the last-minute withdrawal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the elections, labeling it an act of “cowardice.” He emphasized that the PDP had previously engaged in the electoral process and called for accountability among all political parties, implying that their withdrawal was motivated by fear of losing.
The governor cast his vote at Polling Unit 5 in Ugbo Ward 4, Ilaje Local Government, noting the peaceful atmosphere and early arrival of election materials. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving grassroots governance.
Deputy Governor Adelami, who voted at Unit 16 Igboroko 2 in Owo Local Government, echoed the governor’s sentiments about the importance of local governance. He encouraged citizens to fulfill their civic duties by participating in the elections to strengthen democratic practices at the grassroots level.
The ongoing elections come amid heightened political activity in Nigeria, with various parties gearing up for the 2027 general elections. This local election is seen as a crucial test for political parties, particularly the PDP, which has faced internal challenges and a need to re-establish its presence in the state.
As voting continues, state officials are urging residents to prioritize safety and report any irregularities to ensure a smooth electoral process. The outcome of this election could significantly impact the political landscape in Ondo State and set the stage for future electoral contests.
