In celebration of International Workers’ Day, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced an increase in the state’s minimum wage from ₦70,000 to ₦75,000.
Speaking at the May Day rally in Benin City on Thursday, the governor emphasized that the wage increment was a deliberate move to improve the standard of living for Edo’s workforce. “We believe this will make a real difference,” he said. “It’s our way of appreciating Edo workers.”
Okpebholo also highlighted key pro-worker reforms under his administration, including the conversion of over 1,000 casual cleaners into permanent staff, the recruitment of 500 new teachers, and an ongoing review of over 3,000 contract teaching positions for full employment consideration.
Further, the governor disclosed that 450 healthcare professionals have been recruited across clinical and non-clinical roles, while 126 contract workers at the Edo State Specialist Hospital have been regularized.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to timely salary and pension payments.
Comrade Bernard Egwekhide, acting chairman of the Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), commended the governor’s actions, describing them as “bold steps toward alleviating the hardship of workers and pensioners.”
