Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has urged fellow governors in Nigeria’s North-East to jointly confront the twin crises of poverty and insecurity threatening the region.
Speaking during the 11th North-East Governors’ Forum meeting in Damaturu, Zulum emphasised the “sacred responsibility” of leaders to improve living conditions, enhance security, and promote economic development. He stressed that the alarming poverty rate fuels terrorism and called for collective solutions, including revitalising agriculture, investing in climate-resilient practices, and supporting small and medium-scale industries.
“We cannot do all these alone. Our successes are tied to the region’s success,” Zulum said, warning that Boko Haram’s renewed attacks require a coordinated response.
The meeting brought together governors of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe. Host Governor Mai Mala Buni reaffirmed their commitment to regional cooperation. Experts from the Northeast Development Commission, security agencies, and educational bodies were also in attendance to deliberate on sustainable solutions.
