Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has denounced the ongoing political situation in Rivers State, labeling it an “aberration” and a violation of Nigeria’s constitutional order. In a statement, Obi condemned the alleged noncompliance with a Supreme Court ruling that mandates statutory allocations to be released only to a duly constituted legislative body, rather than an appointed sole administrator.
Obi expressed his concern over the disbursement of state funds in defiance of the Supreme Court’s standing order, which prohibits the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant-General of the Federation from releasing these funds until a valid Appropriation Act is passed by a legitimate House of Assembly. He criticized this action as a blatant challenge to the authority of the judiciary and a serious moral issue for the state.
He warned that failing to respect judicial rulings sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the rule of law, urging institutions like the CBN and AGF to uphold the law and avoid complicity in actions that defy court decisions. Obi emphasized that such disregard for the judiciary threatens Nigeria’s democracy and called on leaders to respect constitutional principles to secure the nation’s democratic future.
