The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has opted not to take a position on President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, emphasizing its role as a collaborative platform for promoting unified policies aimed at sustainable socioeconomic development.

In a statement issued on Saturday by NGF’s Director General, Abdulateef Shittu, the forum highlighted that engaging in divisive partisan issues would reflect a misunderstanding of historical contexts. The political landscape in Rivers State has been marked by instability, with former Governor Nyesom Wike and his successor, Sim Fubara, embroiled in a power struggle, leading to Tinubu’s recent emergency declaration.

The NGF urged the public and media to exercise patience, expressing confidence that the appropriate platforms and crisis management strategies would effectively address the ongoing issues. The statement reinforced the NGF’s commitment to its core mission of fostering collaboration among subnational governments without alienating members with differing political affiliations.

The forum reiterated its focus on governance matters that significantly impact the populace, such as wages, taxes, and healthcare, while maintaining a neutral stance on the current political turmoil in Rivers State.
