Suspended lawmaker Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has postponed her planned return to the Senate, failing to comply with a court order requiring her to issue a public apology. This decision follows a Federal High Court ruling that nullified her six-month suspension.

Despite initially promising to resume her legislative duties, Akpoti-Uduaghan did not appear as expected. The Senate leadership has stated it will wait for the official court documents before taking any action regarding her return.

Security measures at the National Assembly were heightened in anticipation of potential unrest, although the Senate’s legal counsel denied rumors of a warning letter advising her against returning.

Last Friday, the court deemed her suspension excessive and unconstitutional, ordering her recall and imposing a fine for contempt due to a previous social media post. As of Tuesday evening, she has yet to offer the required apology, raising speculation about her next steps.

In light of recent events, the Senate is considering amendments to its internal rules to establish clearer disciplinary procedures, which could impact future sanctions against members.
