The Defence Headquarters has reported the deaths of 22 soldiers and more than 70 insurgents during an ongoing military operation in the Timbuktu Triangle, a known terrorist stronghold in Borno State. This operation, conducted by troops of Operation Hadin Kai, began on January 16, 2025, and aims to dismantle terrorist enclaves in the region.

In a statement released on Sunday, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, provided details on the operation, which has involved several encounters with insurgents. Among those killed were three high-ranking commanders: Talha, the Terrorist Special Forces Commander; Mallam Umar, the Operations Commander; and Abu Yazeed, the Brigade Commander.

“Troops of Operation Hadin Kai in the North-East conducted a clearance operation in the Timbuktu Triangle, targeting the terrorist presence there,” Buba explained. “The operation has resulted in the neutralization of over 70 terrorist combatants, including notable commanders.”

During the operations, insurgents employed various lethal tactics, including Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), suicide bombers, and drones. However, Buba noted that the troops successfully countered these tactics, demonstrating their tactical superiority.

“Troops were familiar with the terrorists’ methods and thwarted numerous attempts to impede their advance,” he added. “This included shooting down drones used by the insurgents.”

While acknowledging the loss of 22 soldiers, Buba urged the media to refrain from publishing the names of fallen troops until their families have been formally notified. “We ask that the media respect the privacy of the families and not disclose the names of casualties,” he stated.

As the operation continues, the military remains focused on neutralizing the threat posed by insurgents in the region.
