Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has claimed that the only way to stop President Bola Tinubu from regaining power in 2027 is for citizens to take decisive action. Speaking at the launch of the 2025 Nigeria Social Cohesion Survey Report in Abuja, he stressed that real change cannot come from mere wishful thinking.

Amaechi criticized Nigerians for their passive approach, arguing that elite control continues because citizens choose to remain inactive. He stated, “The elites responsible for stealing Nigerian resources are fewer than 100,000, while there are 200 million Nigerians who could confront them.”

He referenced examples from countries like Bangladesh and Peru, where mass protests effectively removed unpopular leaders, pointing out that Nigeria has become excessively complacent. He reminisced about the past unity between student and labor unions in Nigeria and expressed concern over their current lack of mobilization.

Amaechi expressed disappointment in the political class, claiming they have exacerbated the suffering of citizens more than the military ever did. He underscored the significance of economic indicators, like crime rates, as reflections of societal well-being and called on the government to act in order to restore public trust.

Professor Bell Ihua, Executive Director of the Africa Polling Institute, shared survey results indicating widespread distrust in the Tinubu administration, urging policymakers to tackle these challenges to rebuild public confidence.
