The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has revealed that the military is in talks with the Federal Government regarding the re-engagement of military retirees. He emphasized that these retirees possess valuable skills and experiences that should not be wasted.

General Musa suggested that retirees should be considered for board positions, expressing confidence that they could contribute significantly outside active duty. He made these comments during a cocktail event honoring 18 retired and retiring generals.

The generals recognized include Maj. Gen. A. Mohamed, Maj. Gen. B.Y. Baffa, and others, totaling 18 in tribute to their service.

Musa urged the retired and retiring generals to stay prepared for future service, noting that discussions about their engagement are ongoing. He stated, “Retirement should not be seen as an end but as an opportunity to contribute to national development. We are collaborating with political leaders to ensure that the skills developed in the armed forces are utilized effectively. For those retiring, we are actively considering them for board roles and other positions where they can offer valuable contributions.”

He continued, “This is a work in progress. Your expertise will be required in areas like national strategic planning, defense production, and security, much like how veterans are engaged in other countries.”

At the gathering, Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede commended the retiring generals for their exemplary careers characterized by honor, courage, and dedication. He acknowledged their contributions to peacekeeping missions and their efforts in addressing internal security challenges.

Oluyede remarked, “Their steadfast commitment to protecting our nation’s integrity and its citizens has inspired many to join the military. Throughout their careers, they have served in various roles, significantly enhancing the Nigerian Army’s readiness to meet its objectives, both at home and abroad.”
