Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has advocated for the establishment of an additional state in the South-East to align the region with other geopolitical zones. He emphasized the importance of rotational presidency and state police to enhance inclusivity and improve governance across the nation.

During a meeting with the Senate Committee on Constitution Amendment, Mbah expressed that the South-East, currently the only region with five states, deserves correction in this regard. He highlighted the need for state police services to address local security concerns effectively.

Mbah’s proposals aim to foster a sense of belonging among all regions and ensure the constitution reflects the diverse interests of Nigerians. The Senate committee, led by Sen. Onyekachi Nwebonyi, is visiting the region to gather input for the upcoming constitutional amendments, addressing longstanding criticisms of the 1999 constitution.

Nwebonyi noted the importance of this engagement, as many in the South-East feel marginalized and seek to rectify historical imbalances through the amendment process.
