Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has issued a stern warning against any efforts to disrupt the upcoming National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan. He likened such attempts to “stopping a moving train” and argued that it would be akin to political suicide.
Speaking after the inauguration of the PDP National Convention Transportation Subcommittee, Makinde expressed confidence that Oyo State would host the best convention in the party’s history. His comments come amidst significant internal strife within the PDP, with several prominent politicians joining the African Democratic Congress-led opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
Notably, defections have included key figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President David Mark. Meanwhile, the ruling All Progressives Congress has also attracted notable PDP leaders.
Despite these challenges, Makinde assured party members that the convention would proceed as planned and emphasized the importance of unity and resilience within the party. He called on members to remain committed to the PDP’s ideals and to focus on ensuring a successful convention, stating, “When something lasting is being built, it often gets worse before it gets better.”
In addressing his own political ambitions, Makinde clarified that his priority is the successful execution of the convention, reinforcing that a strong party foundation is crucial for any personal aspirations.
