Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has condemned the proposed salary increase for political officeholders by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC). He characterized the plan as “insensitive” and “scandalous,” particularly given Nigeria’s current economic challenges.
In a statement shared on X, Obi expressed widespread anger among Nigerians regarding the RMAFC’s proposal to raise the salaries of the president, vice-president, governors, and other top officials. He argued that such a move prioritizes the greed of political leaders over the pressing needs of the populace.
“The RMAFC’s reckless haste in prioritizing the greed of politicians over the desperate needs of the masses is not only provocative but scandalous,” Obi stated, highlighting that the proposed salary increase could exceed 100% for political officeholders.
He emphasized that political service should not be a means to accumulate wealth, especially in light of the economic realities facing the country. Obi also criticized the RMAFC for overlooking the welfare of essential public sector workers, particularly underpaid and overworked security personnel.
“It’s disturbing that the RMAFC is prioritizing political office holders over security personnel,” he said, urging the federal government to focus on improving the living conditions of public workers, who he described as “the backbone of the country.”
Obi called for a redirection of attention towards the welfare of Nigerians, especially those in public service who have long been neglected.
